      Rangers Ladies vs Spartans

Oh, and on an unsavoury sidenote, Scottish football pundit Tam Cowan spouts some bile upon the women's game. The paper doesn't deserve and hits for this ...

Tam Cowan: Fir Park should have been torched after it hosted women's football

THE Daily Record's own Gene Hunt - Mr TAM COWAN - gives his take from the dark ages on the Scotland women's match at Fir Park this week.

IF I had my way, today’s Premiership fixture between Motherwell and Ross County would have been cancelled.

That’s because Fir Park should have been torched on Thursday in order to cleanse the stadium after it played host to women’s football.

Why do they still persevere with this turgid spectacle? And why was it allowed anywhere near Motherwell’s hallowed turf?

Admittedly, I’ve not seen a lot of women’s football - just a few little snatches - and I’m not having a pop at the people taking part.

Just the other week, I bumped into a couple of women footballers (I’ve still got the bruises to prove it) and they were honestly two of the nicest blokes I’ve ever met.

But no amount of politically correct claptrap could force me to say I enjoyed a single second of that guff at Fir Park on Thursday night.

And those of you who disagree must be telling porkies.

Quite frankly – and at the risk of getting a slap from my old pal – I found it about as aesthetically pleasing as Joan Burnie’s full frontal pic in yesterday’s paper.

BBC Alba must be scraping the bottom of the barrel if they’re now broadcasting this tosh live.

Aye, give me an hour of some dreary Highlander reciting poems about the fishing industry – in Gaelic – any day of the week. Incredibly, the game was live on telly AND radio!

I can only imagine they were looking for the pundits to swell the crowd (if "crowd" isn’t too strong a word).

I initially assumed it was a closed-doors game. I haven’t seen Fir Park so quiet since Harri Kampman was in the dugout.

If women’s football is so good, where the hell are all the supporters? Surely even the most fervent fans must agree it’s time to chuck it?

Face it, folks, nobody cares about women’s football. There was barely a thousand inside the ground, shocking for an international in ANY sport, and I guess putting the girlies head-to-head with Emmerdale and Eastenders was a bit daft.

For anyone remotely interested, Scotland won 7-0 and Bosnia-Herzegovina were utterly dire.

I honestly think they’d struggle to take three or four goals off St Mirren.

This was a Group 4 game and the Bosnian team looked as if they’d just arrived in one of their vans.

Did you see their goalie? She put the baws into Bosnia (although on the off-chance she reads this, I hasten to add I’m only kidding).

Editor's note: Folks, we would like to point out Tam is a professional funnyman and what he has to say should be taken with a large pinch of salt. Also, his views are not necessarily those of the Daily Record as a whole. If you wish to complain, his email address is

Note to the editor: maybe his neolithic views should have been kept in private then? :vogelzeigen:

      12:00 CSHVSM Almaty - Arsenal LFC 1:7 (0:3)
      15:00 ŽFK Spartak Subotica - WFC Rossiyanka 2:4 (1:3)

-------- Apollon Limassl - FC Neulengbach
-------- KV Lilleström - WFC Malmö
      -------- Konak Belediyesi - U. Raciborz

Rangers now look forward a return to competitive action in their game against Edinburgh side Spartans. The game will be the last with Head Coach Angie Hind in charge before her move to the US to take up her role at Old Dominion University in Virginia.

She added: "To say the team are ready to start the 2014 season would be an understatement. These players been working since mid November on various aspects of their individual game and as a team are stronger, mentally and physically, and as a group are closer than ever.

"We are excited about the draw with Spartans and feel prepared for this game. Spartans are a team with some good individual players and we will be aware of that, however our focus will be on how effective we will be."

      Ladies Record Cup Win

      Monday, 23 June 2014 09:30

RANGERS kick started their Scottish Cup campaign with a comprehensive 12-0 win over Hearts Ladies FC.

A hat trick for Cuthbert, braces for Traynor and Mulvey and individual goals from Barr, Swanson, Hill, Cunningham and Ross ensured the Gers safe passage into the 3rd round of the competition.

After another free week, due to national team fixtures, it was a slow start for the home side with their rustiness showing. In the opening half hour it was the visitors who came closest to breaking the deadlock, a sizzling strike dipping at the last second but came crashing back off the crossbar. One minute later Rangers opened their account. Swanson rolled in Cuthbert who calmly chipped the keeper to take the lead.

Captain Michelle Barr scored her first of the season, making an excellent front post run to tap in a Cuthbert cross from close range.

A fantastic slide rule pass from Hill set up Cunningham for an equally fantastic finish to make it three nil in the dying moments of the half. Deep into injury time of the opening period, however, Rangers managed to net a fourth. Amanda Traynor scoring at the back post after latching onto a Mulvey cross.

Two minutes into the second period Rangers scored their fifth. Mulvey’s initial strike rattling off the crossbar, Swanson got a head to the ball but was knocked off her feet by the out rushing keeper before Traynor stepped in and finished the loose ball.

Only a minute later Swanson piled more misery on the young Edinburgh side hitting the back of the net with number six. Cunningham’s impressive run and cross from the left channel was finished well by the Ayrshire striker.

The light blues top scorer for the season got in on the action next, Mulvey scoring from a 1v1 situation after a well weighted defence splitting pass from Cuthbert. The 15 year old midfield maestro Cuthbert scored again herself soon after; a touch and finish from Hill’s run and cross into the box.

Natalie Ross who had dominated the midfield, as she so often does, managed to add her name to the ever growing list of scorers with 15 minutes remaining. A ball in from Hill on the right resulted in a goal mouth stramash which Ross ended by firing a right foot shot into the back of the net.

Hill who had several assists in the second half scored herself to make it double figures for the home side, Steph Knox rolling her in with a well timed pass and she finished low into the corner.

Goal eleven of the afternoon was a fantastic solo run and finish by Mulvey and the twelfth and final goal completed Cuthbert’s hat trick in the closing minute of the game. Cunningham cut back a pass which Cuthbert hot first time, her shot blocked by the keeper but the sharp footed, young Ger followed in and finished her own rebound.

      Head Coach Michelle Barr speaking at full time;

“We are delighted to progress to the next round of the Scottish Cup. It was a fantastic team performance with goals coming from all areas of the pitch. Credit to a young Hearts side who kept going right till the end but our creativity and high tempo passing proved to be too much for them.

"Special mention must go to Erin Cuthbert who scored her first senior hat trick today- hopefully it will be the first of many for her in top flight football.”
