Academy dominates Rangers FC 4-0
George nets hat trick as Dynamo open European trip with win
08/10/2009 01:13 AM
Houston Dynamo Media RelationsGLASGOW, SCOTLAND -- The Houston Dynamo Academy earned a 4-0 win over Rangers FC of Scotland on Sunday in the Dynamo's first of five games on their 2009 European tour. Forward Jade George (Langham Creek), a second-half substitute, netted a hat trick in the match played at Murray Park. The Dynamo started slowly in the first half, with goalkeeper Pat Wall (Strake Jesuit) making two saves to keep the game scoreless. In the second half, George came on as a substitute in the 55th minute and found net just five minutes later with a rocket from outside the penalty area after a long pass by midfielder and captain Sebastien Ibeagha (Fort Bend Hightower). It was George's first goal since joining the Academy earlier this year. The Dynamo quickly took control of the game, earning a penalty kick in the 63rd minute after a handball. Forward Abe Matamoros (Strake Jesuit) stepped up and fired in the penalty kick to make it 2-0.
Houston dominated the final 25 minutes of play, in which George had several opportunities and finished two to complete the second hat trick in the Dynamo Academy's competitive history. In the 72nd minute, midfielder Josue Morales (Houston Chavez) found George on the run, and after some quick foot work George found himself in the six-yard box and the ball in the back of the net. In the 83rd minute, Ibeagha found his teammate, and George chipped the ball into the far post from seven yards out. It was Ibeagha's second assist of the match.
The Dynamo Academy will have a chance to build on the momentum in Tuesday's match against Celtic FC, which will take place at Celtic's training facility, Lennoxtown.

Gers Withdraw Reserves
By Andrew Dickson
WALTER SMITH has confirmed Rangers will not be taking part in the SPL Reserve League this season.
Reserve manager Tommy WilsonThe Light Blues will instead arrange high-profile friendlies against English Premiership sides as the club sees it as a more productive option.
Manager Smith insists the decision which has been taken is not because of the financial situation at Ibrox.
He has maintained the backroom simply see the move as being more beneficial in the long-run.
Smith said: "We won't be taking part in the reserve league this year but that's got nothing to do with the financial constraints at the club.
"I just feel the reserve league on its own has been devalued and we are better placed to organise games against other sides.
"There's absolutely no financial aspect to it at all - it's about getting decent enough fixtures at reserve level."

Reserves In Action Today
RANGERS Reserves will return to action today when they take on Airdrie United at Murray Park.
Walter Smith recently confirmed that the club's second string will not be competing in the Reserve League in 2009/10 and instead will play in regular friendly fixtures against opposition from Scotland, England and Northern Ireland.
Kenny Black's Diamonds are first up this morning and coach Tommy Wilson wants his young Gers to put in a good performance.
He said: "I think this is an excellent game for us and I know the boys are looking forward to it.
"I spoke to Kenny (Black) about organising a friendly and he was more than happy to do that.
"We have a number of teams that want to play us which is great but it all depends on the size of squad we have after the transfer window and who is available.
"The beauty of the set-up we have now is that the games will be played at a date and venue that suits us, not when we are forced to play with a depleted squad or when we have a fixture pile-up.
"Hopefully we will be able to play every week, that is the aim, but again this may change when midweek Champions League and League Cup games come around.
"It will be a young team we will have out today with the likes of Andrew Shinnie and Andrew Little joining the Reserves again after being with the first-team for a while.
"It was touch and go whether Kevin Thomson would be involved but he is going to do another tough training session instead."
Having dropped out of the SPL Reserve league the coaching staff at Murray Park are currently putting together a match schedule that will benefit the playing staff at the club.
He added: "This season will be different challenge as we will be facing different opposition all over; that includes Scotland, England and Northern Ireland.
"So we are looking forward to that and it's something different for the players.
"We played Manchester City at the end of last season at Murray Park so we are in discussions with them for a return match and we have also agreed to go down to Blackburn Rovers to play.
"Through our contacts we will play teams around the Midlands area and other Premiership clubs so we are really looking forward to that prospect."

Reserves Lose To Airdrie United
RANGERS' Reserves suffered a 2-1 defeat to Airdrie United in today's friendly clash at Murray Park.
Both teams put in a a lot of hard work as the rain battered down on the playing surface for the full 90 minutes.
But it was the Kenny Black's side that came out on top thanks to goals from midfielders Ryan McCann and Mark Smith.
Rory Loy grabbed a late consolation goal for the Light Blues and it was a no more than he deserved after an industrious display.
Rangers were asked to change their strip minutes before kick-off with last seasons away kit deemed the most suitable by the official.
Nevertheless, Tommy Wilson's kids should have got their noses in front early on when Andrew Shinnie darted in to the 18 yard box and his teasing cross found Andy Little unmarked in front of goal.
You would have put your money on the Northern Ireland international, who was playing in attack, hitting the net but his effort was saved brilliantly by Airdrie's keeper.
The opening goal came on 28 minutes and it was a disappointing one to concede.
A dangerous corner was not dealt with by the Gers defence and when the ball was blocked on the line from a header, McCann was there to prod it home from close range.
To be fair the club's youngsters responded well to going behind with Rory Loy heading over from a dangerous Stephen Stirling cross.
And Stirling himself was unlucky when he swerved a shot from 20 yards which narrowly missed the top corner.
But on 48 minutes the Diamonds doubled their advantage with a well taken goal.
Mark Smith made a positive burst in to the last third and his low, left-foot shot across goal gave Adam no chance.
Another blow was to follow when Andrew Shinnie hobbled off with 20 minutes remaining after going for a 50/50 challenge.
The midfielder, who has been heavily involved with the first-team recently, was to leave the training ground on crutches and will have an x-ray on his foot to find out the extent of the damage.
Loy was get a goal back with seven minutes remaining; the striker finding the net with a well placed header after Steven Kinniburgh had whipped in an inch perfect cross.
Wilson, however, was frustrated with his team's display on the day and believes his players can do better.
"On a positive note Rory deserved his goal for his work-rate although he can also play better.
"Steven Kinniburgh was also one of our better players.
"It's just frustrating that when the boys play together as a unit they look like a top team but when they are rusty they can look the opposite.
"In saying that they will have benefited from today's game and can only get better.
"They came up against Airdrie's first-team so we always expected a tough 90 minutes.
"But the bottom line is we can play better and the players know that."

We won 3:0 ... snippet from FF, courtesy of laudrup1, who was there:
ZitatWas a right mix of a team today. Started off as...
Gallacher
Lennon - Perry - Trialist - Cole
Shinnie - Emslie - Ness - Mendes - Stirling
Loy
Mendes came off after an hour and then a raft of changes were made. The trialist was a big black Amercian who was solid if not alot else. Read a couple of interceptions well.
Trialist keeper came on later on too for Gallacher. There were three American and two Italian trialists in total that played.
Loy looked his usual sharp self and I'd imagine if the injury crisis continues, he's got as good a chance as Little of featuring on Saturday. Maybe Little's been impressing in training more recently but Loy's certainly scoring alot of goals.
Perry, back from Oxford, got the third with one of those once in a lifetime centre half goals. He made a run up the park on the breakaway and took a pass 40 yards out and before he knew it he was in the box and lashed a left footed effort into the top corner.

Mendes Steps Up Comeback
Pedro Mendes completed just over an hour of action for the Light Blues as he stepped up his comeback from a knee injury. The Portuguese star was part of a reserve side that ran out 3-0 winners over Dunfermline at Murray Park thanks to goals from Rory Loy, Andrew Shinnie and Ross Perry.
It marked Mendes' first action since late October when he failed to complete the Gers' 4-1 home defeat to Unirea Urziceni in the Champions League.
In a match essentially arranged to give Mendes an opportunity to play the midfielder looked sharp and comfortable throughout in a straightforward victory for his side.
That will have been a boost to the watching Walter Smith and Ally McCoist as they attempt to juggle a squad beset by injury in recent weeks.
The coaches will also have been impressed with Loy who opened the scoring on the half hour mark after sprinting on to a through ball to rifle a right footed effort in to the back of the net.
That gave the Light Blues a lead at the break and Mendes emerged for the second half and was only replaced once the Gers were further in front through Shinnie.
The youngster, also making a comeback from a knee problem earned a penalty and picked himself up to convert the spot kick.
The third and final strike came from an unlikely source in the form of central defender Perry.
The defender, who spent the first half of the season on loan to Oxford, burst forward from the back to collect the ball and send a rocket of a left foot shot in to the roof of the net.
It was a valuable run out for Mendes and a number of reserve players as well as a group of trialists who were given the opportunity to impress.
Two Americans and three Italians were among the squad with a goalkeeper and central defender from the States recommended to reserve coach Tommy Wilson and a trio of Serie A youngsters also appearing from the bench.

Playing staff exodus begins as seven leave
Wednesday, 12 May 2010 21:02 therabbitt
Rangers youth team today confirmed that seven youngsters will be leaving the club as preparations for next season begin in earnest.
Steven Lennon, Stephen Forbes, Scott Durie, Mark Weir, Paul Emslie, Steven Kinniburgh and Andrew Milne have all been told that they don't have futures with Rangers and will begin their search for new clubs for the start of next season.
It's always a tough time of the season as inevitably not all youth players are kept on and someone has to deliver bad news to some young men who have had hopes to star for Rangers at Ibrox for many years now.Perhaps three of the more surprising decisions are the release of Lennon, Emslie and Durie who have all been long spoken of as having some good potential - although for two of these Rangers at least the writing might have been on the wall.
Lennon has been down in England with Lincoln City for the second half of the season and he will hope that he has done enough there to be given a deal whereas Emslie has played once for the first team and has been with Peterhead this season.
RangersMedia wishes all of the lads the best for their futures elsewhere in football.
... as do we!

First new signing of 2010 ...
ZitatTyldesley 16-year-old Sam McMahon joins Glasgow Rangers
12:45pm Thursday 13th May 2010
A TYLDESLEY teenager has signed a two-year deal with reigning Scottish champions Glasgow Rangers.
Sixteen-year-old Sam McMahon put pen to paper with the Scottish giants this week, after a successful trial had peaked the club’s interest in the young striker.
Following a number of knock backs, the former Moorside Rangers junior did not give up on his dream of becoming a professional footballer after being released by Burnley FC in December last year, where he had been on the books since the age of nine.
The contract is the result of a long and difficult road, having been rejected by Bury, Blackpool and Rochdale before making his breakthrough at Doncaster Rovers.
His mother, Lisa Power, said: “I think he has achieved, with hard work and determination, a dream that is beyond most people’s grasps.
“He never let his head drop or his determination falter and when he was having a really rough ride he never stopped forging ahead to achieve every young lad’s dream.”
The Moorside High School pupil signed the two-year contract at the weekend and was in the crowd when Rangers lifted their 53rd Scottish title at Ibrox.
-
And the second one follows suit ...
ZitatRANGERS have signed former Manchester City youngster Andrew Mitchell on a two-year deal.
The 18-year-old midfielder, who can also play at right-back, is eligible for under-19 football next season and will join Billy Andrew MitchellKirkwood's squad initially.
But hopes are high that he will be one of several youngsters that can force their way in to the first-team set-up sooner rather than later.
Mitchell was recently named in Northern Ireland's 18-man squad for the 2009/10 UEFA European under-19 Championship Elite round tournament.
Steve Beaglehole's boys will take on Russia, Italy and the Czech Republic in Group 5 which is being hosted by the Russians from May 21-26.
And Mitchell got the chance to meet some of his Murray park teammates when he travelled to Hong Kong for the prestigious Soccer Sevens tournament in which Rangers reached the final but lost 3-2 to Aston Villa on Sunday.
