Exclusive: Fury as sick thieves steal banner tribute to Tommy Burns
    May 2 2009 Steve Smith

SICK thieves have stolen a fans' memorial to Celtic legend Tommy Burns, a fortnight before the first anniversary of his death.

The "God Bless Tommy Burns" banner has been torn down from outside the Glasgow church where his funeral was held.

We can reveal that the green and white sign - put up by fans after the 51-year-old lost his battle with cancer on May 15 last year - is being hawked around east end pubs.

The poignant tribute had been fitted to a billboard next to St Mary's RC church in Abercromby Street in Calton, where thousands of fans joined football heroes at Burns's funeral.

It's understood it was paid for by a local supporters' group. All that remains now are the severed ropes used to hang it and a tattered corner from where it was ripped down.

The Record has been passed a photograph of it being shown off in a Gallowgate bar.

An underworld source who watched it being passed around one pub said: "The guys who nicked the sign have been parading it around several bars over the last few days as some kind of trophy.

"But it's not going down well with the fans.

To see the sign being hawked around pubs is heartbreaking. Anyone with a shred of decency would put the sign back where it belongs, at the chapel.

"Apparently, some people in the Blackpool area wanted it but it looks like the deal has fallen through because of the bad reaction." Burns had a lifelong connection to the Calton area and regularly attended St Mary's.

To mark the first anniversary of his death, the club have just launched a tribute DVD, Faithful Through And Through, featuring footage of the star's glittering career and his life as a dedicated family man.

And on May 31, a team of former Parkhead stars will take on the current first team in a benefit match to celebrate Burns's life.

It will feature ex-players such as Pierre Van Hooijdonk, Stilian Petrov, Paul McStay, Murdo MacLeod, George McCluskey, Neil Lennon, John Hartson, Paul Lambert and Alan Stubbs, with more to be confirmed.

On the day of the match, Burns's widow Rosemary will unveil a bronze statue of him outside Celtic Park.

  • Ibrox seats smashed again
    Written by Steadfast
    Saturday, 02 May 2009

The bheasts that masquerades itself as the Celtic support once again showed its own unique brand of obloquy, this time it’s at Ibrox Stadium, where they populated the West Enclosure in the Rangers v Celtic Reserve league match and mercilessly destroyed scores of seats to the extent of thousands of pounds worth of damage to our 5-star stadium.

This is not the first time these animals have set about destroying football stadia; during a visit to Rugby Park, Kilmarnock on the day they won the Championship a couple of years ago, similar carnage was noted – again with thousands of pounds worth of damage sustained.

These vermin in green and grey do not care whose ground it is they wreck, they do not listen to appeals from the league hierarchy to desist from it – they think they are above the law, they need to know they are not. The authorities continual ignoring of hooliganism and thuggery has now ensured the bheasts to believe they are untouchable.

Scum smashing seats at Ibrox again

Remember too, the very same filth have been found guilty of persistent damage to the seats in Ibrox in the Broomloan Stand. On one occasion Sir David Murray took the proper decision and banned these sub-humans from the next encounter – similar action is needed again.

It is now time for Sir David Murray to once again exact punishment on the serially offended. We have a fantastic stadium at Ibrox, we do not want it destroyed each time the bheasts in green and grey descend into it.
    We demand action.

    Pic 2
When will When will the authorities in Scotland stand up to these hooligans?

It’s too late to ban them from next weekend’s encounter but next season’s games, yes games, should be considered as vermin free for the Rangers support. We don’t need nor want the anti-British, Pro-IRA element in our stadium.

Do the right thing again, Sir David………..

    Ban them!

    :rfc: Simply a Bear :rfc:

  • Die ausgleichende Gerechtigkeit hat damals 2003 Alex McLeish ins Gespräch gebracht und darauf beruft man sich mitunter gerne. So wie ihr euch gerne auf TGFITW bezieht... I) I)

A former director of Celtic Football Club has denied a £2.3m fraud against the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Businessman Dominic Keane, 54, from Glasgow, is claimed to have tricked two men into signing up to agreements which bound them to debts owed to RBS.

One of the men was another ex-Celtic director, William Haughey, with whom Mr Keane sat on the board in the 1990s.

Mr Keane is also accused of forging Mr Haughey's signature as part of the fraud. The trial will begin in August.

Prosecutors claim that Mr Keane, who has also been a director of Livingston FC, defrauded the bank of £2.3m between October 1999 and April 2001.

He allegedly persuaded millionaire John McGuinness into guaranteeing huge debts with the bank by joining a partnership which he claimed was set up to develop Livingston Football Club.

He is accused of telling Mr McGuinness that Mr Haughey had signed up to the partnership.

    Huge overdraft

Mr McGuinness trusted Mr Haughey's business judgment and this persuaded him to get involved with the scheme, it is alleged.

Prosecutors said Mr Haughey had signed a "partnership letter" binding him to the initiative, but they claimed he did not know what he was putting his name to as Mr Keane had tricked him into thinking the letter was simply a routine business document.

Mr Keane is also accused of stealing a share certificate from Mr Haughey's company, City Refrigeration Holdings, and telling RBS that the businessman had given his permission for it to be deposited as security for a huge overdraft and bank guarantee.

Maurice Smyth, representing Mr Keane, said he could not attend due to a death in the family and entered the not guilty plea for him.

Judge Lady Smith set a trial date for 10 August at the High Court in Edinburgh.

In the 1990s, Keane helped entrepreneur Fergus McCann take over Celtic along with other businessmen, including Mr Haughey.

As a reward, he was given a seat on the club's board, alongside Mr Haughey, who was director from 1994 to 1997.
